Anxiety & Chiropractic Care

Definition of Anxiety: (taken from Merriam-Webster online)

An abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (as sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one’s capacity to cope with it.

The Science of Anxiety:

Healthy anxiety is part of fear and is the body’s alarm system, warning us of danger. When the alarm is broken, it “sounds off” constantly. At this point, anxiety can become chronic and instead of protecting us, it attacks us.

When this happens, we stay in an unhealthy “reaction mode.” Our muscles tense and stay in that position causing spinal subluxation, usually in the neck and upper spine. We clench our jaws, hunch our shoulders, and eventually; the muscle tension continues to impact our spine, muscles, and organs. A common symptom that can mean anxiety is chronic is a severe, headache that is constant without pain medication.

Here’s a visual of the way anxiety impacts the health of my patients:

Onset of anxiety → muscle tension → increased anxiety → inflammation → physical responses (pain, sweating, heart palpitations, etc.) →  increased anxiety → spinal subluxation →increased anxiety

How Chiropractic Care Has Helped My Anxious Patients:

After an exam, and a series of chiropractic adjustments, my patients see a reversal in their symptoms that looks similar to this new, healthy cycle that begins with spinal alignment, and (over time for chronic anxiety) leads to muscle stress and inflammation relief. This frees the body to respond to danger the way it was created for, without the dangers of being on “red alert” at all times.

Spinal adjustment → some relief → spinal adjustment → increased relief and a reversal in physical symptoms → spinal adjustment → increased relief. . .and so on. . .

This is not an overnight process for most of my patients, although many experience some relief from the first treatment. Many people need a series of adjustments as their bodies return to normal.
