Baby Patients – A Case Study

It’s officially called Traumatic Birth Syndrome or TBS.

In what is sometimes called, “doctor assisted deliveries,” subluxations occur when the doctor pulls on the baby using his or her hands, or uses suction.

The most common result is spinal misalignment (subluxation), although serious spinal and skull damage can also occur.

Babies who have experienced this kind of delivery need to be examined and adjusted by a Doctor of Chiropractic. These little ones often go undiagnosed and suffer colic, compromised immune systems, and sleep disorders.

Some studies report that chiropractic care can help in more severe cases as well, including cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, ear infections, and may prevent SIDS.

A Case Study:

Doctor Gutmann, a Pediatric Specilist, from Germany studied 1000 infants. His study concluded that blocked nerve impulses (caused by subluxations) at the level of the first vertebrae can cause central motor impairment, drug resistant conjunctivitis, colds, and reoccurring infections.

One of Dr. Gutmann’s published case studies described an 18-month-old boy who suffered from relapsing tonsillitis, loss of appetite from enteritis, drug therapy resistive conjunctivitis, and increasing sleeping problems. After the first specific adjustment, the boy slept through the night, the conjunctivitis cleared up, and his appetite returned to normal.

“If the indications are correctly observed,” Dr. Gutmann said, “Chiropractic can often bring about amazingly successful results, because the therapy is a causal one. The success of this treatment eclipses every other attempt at treatment, including especially the use of medications.”

At Byron Family Chiropractic Clinic, we enjoy the little ones whose parents bring them in to see us. The earlier a person is treated with chiropractic care, the better.

Chiropractic Care for Newborns

Did you know chiropractic care is excellent for newborns? In a recent Half-Hour to Health I shared that the sooner parents bring a baby in for spinal care, the better. Some parents bring their baby in shortly after birth to correct any misalignments experienced during birth.

Here are a few of the health problems I’ve treated my youngest patients for with success:

  • Colic
  • Digestive Problems
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Chronic ear infections

Find out how chiropractic care can improve your baby’s health, call 507-775-2711 for a free consultation.

Give your baby the best start possible with regular spinal care.

Sweet News for Your Allergies

You  may have heard it on the news: 2012 is going to be a rough year for allergy suffers.

The good news: Local raw honey.  Although traditional medicine debunks the idea, more and more people are finding relief by taking 1 tsp of raw honey per day.  As we ingest the same allergens that cause us to sneeze and our eyes to water, antibodies are released into the body to fight the invaders. This is similar to the medical science of immunotherapy and vaccines.

At Byron Family Chiropractic, we believe in the healing properties of honey for allergies. Many of our patients have experienced relief and are no longer using dangerous over the counter or prescription medications.

Using raw honey doesn’t always bring relief immediately. For some people, it takes time for the anti-bodies to build up and do their work.

In New Zealand scientists studying the healing properties of honey are doing a new molecular study that is proving that raw honey is extremely valuable to the immune system and to the healing of wounds. There’s a lot of talk out there about developing synthetic drugs based on the natural properties found in honey.

Why use synthetic? The body is fully capable of utilizing the healing benefit of natural products that contain no harmful additives.

For residents living in or near Byron and Rochester, we carry Carlin’s Colonies Raw Honey (from Lanesboro, MN) (24 ounces for $7.50)

Before using any products for your allergies, call 507-775-2711 to make an appointment to decide if a combination of raw honey and chiropractic treatments would bring you greater relief.

A Chiropractic Fact

Did you know that the USA Olympics team has a Doctor of Chiropractic on their medical team? Since 2002, the Olympic sports medicine team includes several DCs.

While I believe it makes perfect sense to have a Doctor of Chiropractic serving our Olympic athletes, I also believe chiropractic care is essential for those of us not on that prestigious team. Treatment for back pain, stiffness, joint pain, and headaches (as well as a long list of other conditions), means people can do their jobs and enjoy their lives with increased efficiency and less pain.

Call 507-775-2711 today for a free consultation. Let’s find out how chiropractic care can help you.

The Gonstead Method – The Adjustment

“Find the subluxation, accept it where you find it, correct it and leave it alone.”   – C.S. Gonstead

After I complete a patient’s analysis, I’m ready to adjust his or her spine. Using the Gonstead adjustment system, I am able to provide each patient with specific and precise adjustments, taking care of only the areas impacted by subluxation. I take great care to ensure the patient is in a bio-mechanically correct position so I can provide the most accurate and painless adjustment possible. It is my goal to restore you to and help you maintain a high level of health.

How I Use the Gonstead System

As a Gonstead Chiropractor I use a spinal assessment using five criteria to detect the presence of the vertebral subluxation complex.

Visualization – I am trained to see changes in your posture and movement that indicate potential problems with your spine and over-all health.

Instrumentation – I use the Nervoscope to detect disturbances in the heat along the spine that can indicated inflammation or pressure on my patient’s nerves. I guide the Nervoscope down the length of your back. It feels like two fingers gently gliding down your spine.

Static Palpation – I palpitate the spine in a static position. I am looking for swelling, tenderness or tightness, in the muscles and tissues of my patient’s back.

Motion Palpation – I ask the patient to move and bend while I continue to palpitate the spine. This enables me to determine how each segment of your spine moves.

X-Ray Analysis – These films allow me to see the entire structure of a patient’s spine. I can evaluate his or her posture, joint and disc integrity, and vertebral misalignments. I can also recognize or rule out any other factors that might contribute to the patient’s condition.

This system allows me to give you a complete assessment and a treatment plan based on what your body needs.

The Gonstead Method History

In the early nineteen twenties, a  young man named Clarence Gonstead was diagnosed with acute rheumatoid arthritis and was unable to walk. After being treated unsuccessfully by traditional doctors, his aunt called J. B. Olson, a chiropractor. The doctor treated Clarence with a series of adjustments and rest. Soon, the young man was walking.

Clarence went to trade school, and following his gradutation, took a job as an automotive engineer so he could pay his way through The Palmer School of Chiropractic.

The following is taken from www.gonstead.com

At that time the technical skills of the typical graduating chiropractor were crude and rudimentary. Gonstead changed that and gave the profession a logical and bio-mechanically sound system for practicing chiropractic. With a gift of solving mechanical problems, he developed his own ideas on subluxations, x-ray, and adjusting bones through the empirical data he gathered from his large practice. Although perhaps not his intent, Gonstead redefined the very nature of chiropractic.

Based on his personal and professional experience, Dr. Gonstead led the way for Doctors of Chiropractic like me to help people like you.

A Pain in the Neck

With the increased use of computer for work and entertainment, the number of people suffering pain in the neck and shoulder areas is on the rise.

When sitting at a desk for several hours at work, and then later enjoying a couple of hours of games and/or emails how we sit matters to our spinal cord. The wrong position causes subluxations of the bones and pain. There are other side-effects of improper posture, but one of the most important is the way it can hamper the way a person breathes. Many people who sit at a computer for hours, take in less oxygen causing other complications such as headaches and tiredness.

Here are some ways you can relieve the pain in your neck and improve your overall health while still earning a living working on your computer:

1. Check with your chiropractor to be sure the pain you’re enduring is caused by subluxations of your spine.

2. After working at your computer for an hour, take a break. This can be as simple as doing a few stretching exercises prescribed for you by your chiropractor – you want each  movement to propel  you toward healing.

3. Remember to breathe. One way to do this is to place a sticky note in your work area that you check often, with the word “breathe,” written on it. If you drink at your desk, when you reach for your beverage, take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths before, or after you take a drink.

4. Ask your chiropractor for a long-term plan of action. If you spend hours working on a computer, you need to factor chiropractic care into your health regimen. With less pain, you will experience more personal and professional gain.

Call my office for a free consultation. 507-775-2711.
